“What goes best with a cup of coffee? Another cup.” – Henry Rollins
Truth be told, I hope I do not have any enemies. I do not have time for that negativity and hate in my life. It just seemed to fit in the title. What I am remembering in this part is all the times spent with friends at the local coffee shop. We would meet there before going out or gather to study for tests and work on group projects. We would meet there before group dates to dilute the awkwardness of a one on one date. It was also the place to meet for a double shot of awkwardness during a first date as we would sit and get through the pleasantries over a cup of coffee before heading out to dinner and a movie. It’s just what we did.
It didn’t matter what you drank or how you drank it, the coffee shop provided the space for the bitter and the sweet to be experienced while sitting at a little table with a hot beverage. It was the place where friends were made; love was found and lost as well. It was a place to gather for the meeting before the meeting and again for the meeting after. What magic has happened during those times? It was a place to love and a place to hate. A place to grieve and a place to heal. A place to laugh and a place to cry. It was a place to experience the full spectrum of life.
I cannot count the hours I have spent at the local coffee shop. Nor can I recall all the memories and all the different faces I have shared those hours with. The ones I can recall simply confirm that coffee is so much more than a dark, warm beverage. It is a catalyst for life. It fosters the connections for love and friendship, it opens the space for souls to heal, it comforts the pain of broken hearts, and it the softens the suffering of tortured souls. Wow! What power contained in a little cup of hot water strained through a roasted fruit.
Am I taking this too far? Absolutely not. Take a moment to reflect on your life. How much was lived over a cup of coffee. Have you had a first coffee date? A casual job interview? A break up, an apology, a fill in the blank. It might just be a simple hot beverage that I enjoy far too much, but it provides so many memories of my life and the experiences that I have shared with so many people.
I have listened and I have lectured. I have comforted and been comforted. I have been hurt and I have hurt. I have laughed and I have cried. I have dumped and been dumped. I have sat in silent scorn and I have spoken my truth. I have made friends and I have lost friends. I have experienced one extreme to the other and all that falls in between. All over a cup of coffee.
So, is it just a hot beverage, yes, but the experiences and connections are so much more.
